Sitio-Milang Bilang is a small community that destroyed and lost due to sea level rise that greatly effectively the lives of the people of Brgy. Binaobawan.
The mangrove reforestation initiative is one of the priorities of the Municipal Environment and Natural resources Office (MENRO) in Coastal Barangay of Pilar, Capiz, Aims to rehabilitate and regenerate of degraded mangrove forest for the climate change adaptation and mitigation. The total target area for mangrove reforestation is from Sitio Kawit Brgy. Binaobawan to Brgy. Rosario Pilar, Capiz which stretch at around four (4) kms.
Planting Site at SitioKawit/ Sitio Milang-Bilang Brgy. Binaobawan Pilar, Capiz in which suitable for Mangrove Nursery and reforestation. The site is previously a mangrove area. We have conducted a courtesy call with the Brgy. Officials, Fisherfolks and community living near the coastal area to propose the “Project Binaobakawan”, in which some of them can benefit a lot in terms of their source of income/livelihood. We conducted Orientation/Meetings regarding the mechanics/techniques for planting of Mangrove wildlings among the beneficiaries.
We have started with 42, 000 pcs of wildlings and bagged and conducted/established mangrove nursery at Sitio Kawit Brgy. Binaobawan Pilar, Capiz. We engage and encourage coastal community, Members of registered People’s Organization, NGO’s and Binaobawan Fisherfolks Association, which our primary beneficiaries to do their share by replanting mangroves and bagging of wildlings.
Like coral Reefs Mangroves forest are extremely productive ecosystems that provide numerous goods and services both to the marine environment and people. Mangrove is also serving as home to a large variety of fish, crab, shrimp, and other species. These fisheries form an essential source of food for the coastal communities. The mangrove forest also serves as nurseries for many fish species, including coral reef fish. It is also essential to maintaining water quality with their dense network of roots and surrounding vegetation, they filter and trap sediments, heavy metals, and other pollutants. Further, there are several aesthetic and cultural services that mangroves provide, including those related to tourism, education, and local indigenous knowledge and traditions.
Bayanihan spirit is alive in Binaobawan. Be inspired how residents of Brgy. Binaobawan unite to save their homes and their livelihood from the harsh sea level rise as one of the effects of Climate change.
